Dolch sight words are those words in the English language that just don't make sense! Our language is very complex, and as readers, we come across many words with letters that do not make the "familiar sounds" that they should. For example, the word "the" is a word that doesn't follow the rules of phonics. If it did, it would be spelled "thu." What about the word "who!" Whoever decided how to spell this word must be crazy! Why isn't it just spelled "hoo?" Many of the words young readers encounter don't make sense.
These words that don't follow the familiar sound rules make up 75% of what we read! Helping children become familiar with sight words helps them to become readers! I have included a document that provides lists of sight words for grades Kindergarten - 3rd. You will find it in the "Documents" section at the left of this page. Check them out! Have fun with words! Make flashcards, point them out while reading to your child, or play a little game of hide-and-seek and look for the words in stores, on signs or in the car. ;)
